MAYAN Ruins

You can not get more Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft than here in Chichén Itzá.

It is a complex of Mayan ruins on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. A massive step pyramid, known as El Castillo or Temple of Kukulcan, dominates the ancient city, which thrived from around 600 A.D. to the 1200s. Graphic stone carvings survive at structures like the ball court and it is amazing how accurate this building was to read the seasons, time and basically map the stars above.

These days climbing the pyramid is no longer allowed but with the heat and humidity, not a problem.

On the list of one of the 8 man made wonders of the world, this place is truly worth the visit.

Just a note if you do wish to visit Chichén Itzá, get here early morning to avoid the massive crowds and the immense heat..

There are also lots of stalls around the ancient grounds selling all kinds of things Mayan/Mexican. Don't feel bad haggling for the price you want. I found that they will not let you leave without succumbing to your price request as there are so many sellers, they want the sale for themselves.
